Contributed to development, logistics, surveying, and fabrication in collaboration with ChiLab Studio, Max Davis Group, Mackin Projects, REX Engineering, Terry Dowd Inc. and The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

2022-23

@ O’Hare International Airport

jina valentine is an artist who leverages data to explore the cultural dynamics of our society. “a murmuration,” features the the river systems of the Midwest, as a template to map demographic migrations in the region over the course of 200 years (1840-2040). Each of the 13 instances represent a snapshot of the region’s changing population. This mapping helps display the true influence that has shaped the society of the area, and dispels stagnant understandings of identity.

The piece, spanning about 300’ in O’Hare Airport, serves as a gateway for the wider world to see the Midwest from a wholistic perspective, and feel included in it’s history. It is a new crown jewel in Chicago’s bountiful public art scene, and will serve to introduce the world to the story of the city for decades to come.

Spiral Staircase:

A two story steel spiral stair, finished with a masterful 12 step patina. The design of this tremendous staircase was inspired by the mail chutes that were found in the building from its previous life as Chicago’s Post Office.

Feature Wall:

This splash wall is composed of 90 custom patinated cast metal tiles. The design was inspired by the stacked containers found in a shipping yard, as seen from above. The forms were procedurally generated, so each casting could be unique, and no patterns would repeat throughout the wall. The use of 3D modeling and printing, allowed for this design to be executed in ways considered impossible by traditional means.

Leonard Suryajaya - Homebound

Project developed and production managed in collaboration with ChiLab Studio, CNL Projects, Earth Art Chicago, Karpowicz Studio, and The Chicago Parks District.

2023

@ Dusable Harbor

Leonard Suryajaya is an artist whose work is heavily inspired by family, community, and history. He uses the inherent ambiguity created by those overlapping influences like a kaleidoscope, allowing new surreal forms and relationships to self-manifest.

Homebound” is part of the Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation’s citywide “Earth Art Chicago” initiative. A campaign created to speak about the environment through public art, while engaging the Chicago community in the process. Leonard’s work sits at a foundational location for the city. The intersection of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan is the seed of Chicago’s history, and is a testament to the roll that the environment plays in the ability of humanity to thrive. The sculpture provides a dreamlike and disorienting experience as you discover it’s morphing perspectives.

It serves as a gateway to all those adventuring downtown, to reorient there interpretations of the space, and therefore the time they are in. This reflection on what makes up the artist’s formative world, is a testament to both what environmental stewardship seeks to preserve, and why we should remain human, despite the daunting prospects of our collective future.

This bespoke stainless and bronze screen reaches the entire height of the atrium in Knoll’s Design Center. The Center is located in the incredible Fulton Market neighborhood in Chicago’s near west side. The letters are formed by mounting custom modeled, fabricated, and patinated bronze elements to full height stainless steel tube. The screen is a striking, and refined implementation of Knoll’s branding. Beyond that, it’s shear scale is awesome.
